Boycott the RIAA in March

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Gizmodo have took it upon themselves to start a boycot of RIAA music: Putting Our Money Where Our Mouths Are: Boycott the RIAA in March - Gizmodo. Although the effect is questionable the intention is a good one. Beyond just stopping to buy RIAA albums there is something else you could do though; help make RIAA free music easier to find. The RIAA radar is doing a great job at building a database of RIAA free music. Why not use that database and tag all music on Last.fm that is RIAA free with the appropriate tag (i.e. riaafree). If enough people help in this effort we’ll soon have a nice and clean Last.fm radio channel for everyone to check out. At first you will be the only one who can see the riaafree tagged music but after enough people tag artists with this tag everybody will be able to easily enjoy it.

365 days of MP3s in a torrent

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

You may have once started downloading the MP3 files from the 365 days project when it first started and then probably kept it up for about a month, like me, after which you forgot all about the site. Luckily a post on ochblog reminded me of the page and it now features a month by month overview which made the ideal starting point for a downloading spree. Since you are probably too lazy too click 365 files, like me, i made a nice little torrent for your perusal. Please download, share and seed!

The 5000 fans theory

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

Scott Andrew lays out a simple plan for the new world musician, with new world being a world in which you don’t make your money of CD sales. It simply states that if you manage to persuade 5000 fans to spend 20 dollars on your stuff (downloads, t-shirt, concert tickets) you make 100k a year and can quit your day job. So… as a musician you really don’t need your record company and you should probably support MP3 downloads of your music since they get your name out there and drive your online and ticket sales.

if you really like a particular artist and want to support them without paying for yet another piece of plastic, the very best thing you can do is tell other people. Swap those MP3s, burn those CDRs, blog about them, play those tunes in your podcasts.
