Quicksilver Plugin for Jaiku (using Plazes)
Today i finished the Jaiku Quicksilver plugin i have been using for a while but never got ready for general distribution. The script works in mysterious ways, or better put; it uses not only Quicksilver but also Plazes to do an update so you don’t have to set the location by hand and can simply type a message and be done with it. This of course comes with a price; you will have to have the Plazes plazer installed to actually use the script. This makes the potential group of users rather small but there are bound to be at least four people out there who find this useful
Install guide!
- Download the Applescript file
- Make a folder called Actions in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver
- Copy the Jaiku Applescript into the Actions folder
- Restart Quicksilver (sometimes it is hard to get it to refresh)
- Add your plazes username and password to the keychain using the name http://beta.plazes.com (if it’s not already in there)
- Add your jaiku username and personal key (as the password) to the keychain using the name http://api.jaiku.com (you can get your personal key here). Use the application called Keychain Access for this and the previous step.
- You’ll have to click yes a bunch to allow the keychain to be used
There is a plazeless version too, follow the same steps as above only leave out the ones where it invloves Plazes.
User guide!
- Open Quicksilver (command-space)
- Hit . (period) to open text mode
- Type your message
- Hit tab
- Start typing Jaiku
- When you see Jaiku appear as the action, hit enter
- Go check you Jaiku stream to see if it worked!
Version history
- v0.1, 14-3-2007, initial release
- v0.2, 14-3-2007, removed default icon since it can’t be changed yet anyway
Roadmap
- Icon selection
- Maybe get Plazes data from feed (no need for a password)
- Maybe release a plazeless and/or a standalone version (if anyone needs it)
- …
p.s.
The script is ‘run only’ for now since not all of the stuff it uses is public yet. Full code should be available soon so you can go build your own versions. changed files to full source, adapt and multiply!

I actually vote for a plazes-less version if you have the time. Just use the last known location, if possible.

but where’s the fun in that though…
anyway, should be easy since i just need to strip out stuff. brb.

done, added download link for those who wish to remain plazeless.

Works like a charm.

Awesome

a quick way to restart quicksilver is to bring up the quicksilver window (command-space) and then do command control Q

[…] There are a couple of cool projects already out for Mac OSX. Jaiku Growler allows you to receive alerts from Growl whenever you or any of your Jaiku contacts post a new Jaiku. There’s also a Quicksilver script that lets you post Jaikus directly from Quicksilver. […]

Doesn’t seem to work for me. I went through all the install steps and then I went through all the steps on using it and nothing comes up in my Jaiku stream

Let me state here and now that this software comes with “works on my machine” certification only and it will probably make your mac poop beer nuts and die. Feel free to write niftier versions though, i’ll post the results right here.

[…] Jaiku: Over the weekend played around a bit more with Jaiku, the presence monitoring tool similar to Twitter, but with quite a few more features. One nice aspect is that you can combine Twitter like updates with other types of data such as your Flickr photostream, RSS feeds and even your Twitter posts. So with Jaiku, you can combine elements of your online presence into a single stream. This also generates an RSS feed, so you can easily combine the elements of your online presence and share it with others. They have an API and already have Quicksilver hooks. I’ve added an RSS Feed of my Jaiku stream to the sidebar. I’m having a bit of trouble getting it to display (it could be theme relates, not sure…) so have also used the old standby Feed2JS and also threw that in the sidebar too. […]

To “add the password to your keychain”, use the application “Keychain Access”.

I’m excited to try this out, but it’s silently failing for me (as Jason reported above). Any hints for diagnosing (i.e. anyone know how to coerce Quicksilver into invoking an action via Script Editor)?

Nevermind! I found that Quicksilver was logging appropriately to console.log, and learned that the Keychain entries must be in your primary “login” chain. Works like a charm.

[…] - what if i could pull my location data from plazes? (and have it set automatically when I post an update) (forgot about tijs’ QS plugin) - what if i could extract my location data into my blog (”blogged from…”) - what if it tied into my google calendar to show where i am going to be? - proper profile pages, like flickr - view everyone in ‘Stockholm’ right now - LJ style autolinking names (hanged out with _mz_ today, etc.) - means of crossposting comments from Jaiku to flickr/blog/etc - private messages - os x notifier - sidebar URLs should be linked - favicon for my blog feed (in the sidebar) - proper unsubscribe from comments notification in certain threads - post updates by email - easy feed add (plug your flickr username and the system does the rest) - full text search - proper IM integration (most recent jaiku presence becomes my away message, and vice-versa) - condensed view of location history (user has posted from X, Y and Z in the past week) […]

[…] Jaiku is a “micro” blogging service where entries are limited to 140 characters (not coincidentally the max allowed length of SMS messages). Basically for quick little thoughts, ideas, whatever. There is a commenting system as well. I’ve only been on it for a few days, but it seems pretty cool so far. I use the juhu client (along with a jaiku quicksilver plugin, although it appears the the plazes part isn’t working correctly, I need to diagnose that) and with the commenting ability it’s almost a real time chat, but you don’t have to respond in real time. If that makes any sense. […]

Thank you! You might wish to make your webserver aware of scpt files or, more conveniently, zip/tar the scripts. Now their MIME type seems incorrect when downloading, making Safari open them. Saving forces an html extension which then has to be changed.

@dwizzy: good call, zipped them both up nice and tight.
