Sour Apple

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

update: there is a simple workaround to get it working anyway which makes the fact that an official fix is still nowhere to be seen even stranger.

Caution, angry rant follows.

Most of the time Apple makes great stuff and acts like a reasonable company but sometimes Apple sucks just as bad as some other large companies. Bluetooth support in Apple OS X has been broken for a month now and it appears Apple is not doing anything to remedy the problem. Bluetooth worked fine in version 10.4.3 but broke for lots of Motorola, Palm and Nokia (as far as i can gather from the support forums) devices with 10.4.4. Since then version 10.4.5 has arrived which appearenlty fixed lots of stuff except bluetooth functionality. The fact that an OS can lose, to some people, vital functionality and stay that way for several weeks is to me unacceptable. The fact that there is no official answer to the questions people have or even to bug reoprts i and others have sent is even worse. For now it just doesn’t work and there is no way of knowing if Apple is even working on fixing this.

Allright, got it off my chest.

Using SVN for Web Development

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

I just finished a largish web project with multiple developers and we thought it would be a good idea to use SVN for our central repository. I guess it was had we planned the use of a versioning system a little better. We didn’t so eventually we ended up just FTPing stuff to a test server. Web projects have a few properties that make them hard to version control like dependencies on server configurations and databases. Furthermore it requires a lot of discipline from the people involved so plan carefully. If you are wondering if your project might need versioning read this primer first and then decide if you are up for it. Planning the process beforehand will save you lots of headaches.

Wordpress 2.01, time to upgrade?

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

I am not sure yet if it’s time to upgrade but we’ll know soon enough. I for one am waiting just a tiny bit longer. There aren’t any new features i need in 2.0 and i didn’t hear of anyone tackling the biggest problem of Wordpress; it’s rather inefficient use of the database.
