Little weblog experiments

Thursday, December 30th, 2004

As of today i am allowing anonymous file uploads on this blog (see the sidebar on the right). Maybe it will turn into an ugly mess. Maybe it will be nice or even interesting. At least security wise it should be pretty safe but if this site is suddenly gone you’ll know what has happened ;)

Identificatie plicht? Gelijk oversteken!. Nette site voor een prima initiatief.

tijs.org updates

Thursday, December 23rd, 2004

* comment post bug was fixed
* the “/start”:http://www.tijs.org/start/ page is finally pulling it’s data from the “Wordpress”:http://www.wordpress.org/ built-in linkmanager
* the comment and permalink post pages now show the time of posting (i.e. this was posted 3 days and 7 hours ago..)

still todo:
* rework my script that extracts urls from some of the mailing lists i subscribe to to make it output into the wordpress linkmanager. There don’t seem to be any API functions to handle links so i’m afraid i’ll have to write directly to the Wordpress DB. If anyone has a better idea…
* an actual original design (no top priority right now)

Die(cleanly)!

This article: Contingency Design - Leveraging Google when your database server takes a holiday shows how a small change to your code helps create a much more pleasing user experience. Combine this with a smart use of “hand rolled error reporting”:http://nl.php.net/manual/en/ref.errorfunc.php#ini.display-errors and you got some mean contingency design in place in no time at all.

Cool use of video on a website!

The Ask Crystal Show: the answer to all your problems. Ok it does remind a bit of the overhyped subservient chicken but flash and video is getting easier to do so it’s a cool way to add a little extra to a website.

Bluetooth Radar

Tuesday, December 21st, 2004

For when you don’t want to miss any chance to meet that special someone: (((BtRadar))). I already worked out this idea with a friend once but i didn’t know enough Java to actually implement it back then. Doesn’t work on my k700i yet so i can’t tell you if it actually works. If someone found an easy way to to talk to the bluetooth hardware with java (or maybe it was already easy) we’ll probably be seeing a lot more interesting apps soon.
